Move over chicken & waffles, there’s a new combo in town. Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken opened in downtown Los Angeles a couple weeks ago to much fanfare. Is it worth the hype? Yes indeed. First off, is is doughnut or donut? I’ll use doughnut for this post since that’s how they spell it in their name.
DTLA
I know I pride myself on the fact that I live a healthy lifestyle…80% of the time. I also when to let loose. If you follow my IG pages then you then you know what I’m talking about – 80% @FitSlowCookerQueen, 20% @Top_LA_Restaurants When I heard a new doughnut & fried chicken joint opening in DTLA I couldn’t resist. I don’t have a car so the fact that I made it downtown in the middle of the day in LA says a lot. I was really itching for some chicken & doughnuts. The location is extremely easy to find but like most of DTLA there is no designated parking for the establishment. You’re on your own to find street parking or you can park in the garage right around the corner on Olive. This isn’t a sit down restaurant and stay for a while over a good meal type of restaurant. With a few tables and seating, it’s more of a get your food and go. But let’s be real it’s chicken & doughnuts folks, what else do you expect? There’s even a couple tables outside so you enjoy your food in the sunshine.
Doughnuts
Not gonna lie – I’m not really a doughnut person. Before leaving my house I peeked at Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken‘s menu online (like I always do before I go out to eat) and I was instantly intrigued. Crazy doughnut concoctions are all the rage right now but these are different. There’s no rainbow or glitter. But there’s bacon and crème brulée!! They have 4 doughnuts that are always on the menu: Vanilla Glazed, Maple Bacon, PB&J and Crème Brulée. Then there are Astro specials. The specials for me were Meyer Lemon Pie, Strawberry Rhubarb Crisp, Smoked Almond Brittle, and Chocolate Mudslide.
Of the specials, the Chocolate Mudslide was my favorite! Which I know will come as a shock to anyone who know me because I am not really a chocolate person. But like the oreo cheesecake at The Cheesecake Factory, it was so good it that it made me want more. It was that good.
Close second was the Maple Bacon. They had me at bacon. REAL crispy bacon. As a non-doughnut person here’s what I really liked about their doughnuts – they’re light, soft and fluffy. Everything I think a doughnut should but but they rarely seem to be these days. Seems like everyone is so worried about making the best cosmetic looking doughnut that they forget about the actual flavor. That’s where Astro Doughnuts gets it right. Their doughnuts not only look great but they actually taste really good.
Fried Chicken
Now on to the chicken. Okay I’ll admit it, I came for the chicken. At first! I didn’t expect to like the doughnuts! But the chicken is the real test. I do not play when it comes to fried chicken. My Mother’s is the best by the way. Anyway, I was skeptical I’ll just say that. No joke. After one bite I turned to my friend and said, “DELICIOUS”. Yes I went there.
Fried chicken paired with doughnuts is better than fried chicken & waffles. If anything, think about it, it just makes sense. Grab a leg, grab a doughnut…much easier than grabbing a waffle.
Crispy. Perfectly fried. Perfectly seasoned. Breast, leg, wing, tender…whatever is your preferred cut of chicken is, they’ll serve it. Perfectly.
Do I spend a lot of time downtown? Nope. However the food was so good next time I’m down there I would go out of my way to stop in. Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken is a little too heavy for my day-to-day eats but I would definitely recommend this place to anyone who is looking for some good friend chicken. And no, I was not paid to say that.

I would gladly say goodbye to waffles and fried chicken after looking at these scrumptious doughnuts and fried chicken. My mom was known for her fried chicken. I mean, I am from GA after all and most moms in the south make amazing fried chicken.:) I keep thinking about that Myers Lemon Pie Doughnut. I’m such a citrus fan and I would love to take a big bite out of one of the lemon doughnuts. I need to plan a trip to LA and make sure I stop by Astro Doughnuts. Looks delicious!
OMG! I can’t believe these are sold in a combo….do you even feel like eating the sweet at the same time?
Individually they look great but not sure if I would order it together. Here’s to being adventurous !! xx

Geez, count me in to make a trip to this place, Astro Doughnuts & Fried Chicken has it going on, I’ve never seen doughnuts like those listed above. You better believe I would definitely give their food a try…lol P. S. don’t I sound greedy…lol
Oh.my.god. Look at those beautifully decorated donuts. I’m so excited because this weekend there is a pop up vegan donut shop in my town…right in time for my birthday! I’m obviously going to indulge in one, or two, or three. 🙂
These donuts looks so good and so does the chicken. I have never heard of Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken but I would so love to visit there some day. The doughnut with the bacon on top is something I have been wanting to try for a while. Thanks for sharing this awesome place.
I have never heard of this place but it looks so delicious. Those doughnuts have my stomach growling.
If I were given two wishes right now, I’d wish I was in downtown LA sitting inside Astro Doughnuts and Fried Chicken enjoying their doughnuts. My second wish would be that they open up a branch near me! Oh my goodness, I would love to have a chance to taste the Maple Bacon doughnut! I would love to buy a dozen each of the Maple Bacon and the Chocolate Mudslide. My husband and the kids can have the chicken. 🙂
This looks like a combination I could crave on my cheat Saturday when we pig out. The donuts look delicious
I always had these combos in mind to get in donuts I think it really is intriguing to me. I wish we had these in Dubai. We probably do maybe I need to do some research lol
The food looks lovely ..I am hungry! I think I will like the chocolate mudslides. Ha ha…so many calories…I will have to run for the entire day!
I am a fan of chicken. Most people are. I am also a fan of doughnuts (some varieties more than others). However, I have to admit I have never considered having the two together in the same sitting. You have really peaked my curiosity now as these guys running the place are obviously doing well and are pretty popular. This is something I will have to try.
Yummy! I love doughnuts too and its hard to resist. Your post made me crave for doughnuts.
I love both but definitely not a combination that I would have put together myself. Looks delish but I don’t know how I could eat both at the same time. LOL
